Maths

Maths at our school is built on depth, clarity, and secure understanding. We follow the White Rose Maths scheme as the backbone of our curriculum, providing a carefully sequenced, mastery‑based approach from EYFS to Year 6. This ensures that children build strong number sense, develop reasoning skills, and gain confidence in applying their knowledge across a range of contexts.

Our teaching is further strengthened by evidence‑informed guidance from the NCETM (National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics). Their research on mastery, small‑step progression, and the use of representations and structures helps us ensure that every child develops a deep and connected understanding of mathematical ideas. Teachers draw on NCETM materials—such as the Curriculum Prioritisation documents and Mastery Professional Development resources—to refine planning, address gaps, and support high‑quality teaching.

White Rose resources are adapted to meet the needs of our pupils, ensuring that lessons include fluency, reasoning, and problem‑solving opportunities. This combination of structured progression and professional expertise allows us to deliver a curriculum that is ambitious, inclusive, and fully aligned with the National Curriculum.

What Children Gain from Our Maths Curriculum

  • Fluency and confidence with number facts, methods, and mental strategies

  • Deep conceptual understanding, supported by concrete, pictorial, and abstract representations

  • Strong reasoning skills, learning to explain, justify, and explore mathematical ideas

  • Problem‑solving resilience, applying maths to puzzles, investigations, and real‑life situations

  • Secure progression, thanks to small steps and revisited concepts across the curriculum

  • A positive mathematical mindset, nurtured through engaging lessons and consistent routines

By combining White Rose Maths with NCETM’s mastery principles, we ensure that every child has the opportunity to achieve mathematical success. Our aim is for pupils to leave primary school as confident, capable mathematicians who enjoy the challenge and creativity of mathematical thinking.
